Douglas Haig has famously been called ‘The Butcher of The Somme’, having been commander for the biggest British military offensive, and subsequent casualties, in history. What began on 1 July 1916 is often referred to as a slaughter – inadequate preparations and inneffective tactics meant the British 4th Army suffered 57,470 casualties on the first day. In total nearly 1 million men suffered a similar fate. Thanks to hindsight, many of Haig’s views on the situation are extremely ironic. Below are 20 of Douglas Haig’s most ironic quotes:
