So, I’m finally out here in Joshua Tree for the second annual Contact in the Desert UFO conference.
Cue the “Close Encounters …” theme music.
The four-day conference features scientists, researchers, archeologists, best-selling authors and experts featured on History Channel shows such as “Ancient Aliens” and “Hangar 1.”
I drove out the day before the conference officially starts. I wanted to get my tent set up – yes, I’m camping under the stars – and to get a taste of the vibe.
The event is being held at the Joshua Tree Conference Center, a new age, metaphysical-type retreat not far from the entrance of Joshua Tree National Park.
As I drove in, a nice man standing near a small security booth at the front of the facility kindly directed me to the office.
This place is all dirt roads that seem to go in every direction.
I finally found the small office building, where a crowd of about 50 people were gathered around a table near the entrance.
A woman walked out of the office and said to the group, “Are you ready to be beamed up!”
Yep, I’m in the right place.
Turns out she was talking to the volunteers who would be working the conference, so I made my way around the crowd and got into the registration line.
It looks like it’s going to be a well-attended event, based on what looked like hundreds of registration envelopes lined up on tables.
As a member of the media, I guess I did not rate an envelope or cool wristband.
But I did get a Contact in the Desert media badge.
The lady handing out the envelopes didn’t look up when I asked her where the campgrounds were. She just pointed behind her and said, “You’ll find the campgrounds out there.”
Remember how I mentioned all of those dirt roads? Yeah. It took me a while to find the place. Setting up the tent is another story.
Next installment: Meeting attendees. Tonight’s visit to the Giant Rock!
